Little Pieces of Art by Brandie Butcher- Isley

PRIDE

 

This piece is a rebirth of an ATC I did a couple years ago.  The boy is my great uncle and the baby is my grandfather.  My uncle lived behind my grandparents house in a little house of his own.  I would visit him often when I was little, and my grandma would either have me take him a plate at mealtime, or he would come up and eat with us.  It had always been about family then...  I feel that that culture has been lost...

This photo hanging from the top of the piece is the house my grandfather was born in.  My Great Grandmother is standing out front shading her eyes from the sun.     I am not sure who that little peanut is running near the corner of the house.

The new piece was created on a cradled MDF panel measuring 9 x 9 x 2 inches.

Her Kindness Is Her Greatest Virtue

 

This is a piece I did for RuthAnn.  It features her grandmother Ruth.  RuthAnn spoke of how she remembers how nice her Grandma was... that she was a very kind person. 

I thought she looked so confident and strong.  She is so beautiful... can't you just picture her face when it lights up in a smile?  Seriously, I look at this picture, and I can just see it.  I hope RuthAnn likes it! 

I met RuthAnn through an email invitation.  She asked that display my art in a gallery that she manages at her Church.  I agreed.  When we met in person I instantly liked her.  She is so very kind.  I think she may take after her grandmother.  Yes it must run in the family.

I really love how this one turned out.  It is very rich and the depth is exceptional this time I think.  Her pose was challenging which sometimes as in this piece ultimately helps with the composition.

"Her Kindness is Her Greatest Virtue" measures 10 x 10 x 1.5 inches and was created on gallery wrapped canvas.  My scan bed is too narrow... we lost about 3/4 inch off both the top and the bottom of the artwork.

Shades of Grey and Paper White, Maybe This Is Heaven

 

"Maybe this is Heaven"

Isn't she the sweetest?  She is the perfect girl to make Shades of Grey and Paper White look absolutely vibrant and beautiful...

This idea came from a visit with frame shop/ gallery owner Angela Williams.  We had just finalized a show date for October 1st.  She said that it would really be cool to take my style and try to do black and white with clean lines.  I was inspired by the idea... but I have to say I was a little apprehensive... 

I love my bumpy edges and lumpy corners, the thought of clean lines was a little intimidating, but then I thought about my clayboard pieces and how they have the straight clean edges.  I went with shades of grey, because I think it looks great with the creamy and worn look of the old book text.  For the next one I will choose ephemera that is a cleaner text page... and use more dark greys or even black!!! 

OOOH... This is fun...  It is going to be a theme, and will possibly be the theme used for the show at the The Great Frame Up in October later this year!  I am so excited! Thanks Angela!

This piece was created on a 4 x 4 inch artist panel.  I cut the text to fit perfectly... no wrapping around the edges.  I painted the edges black to give the edges more of a clean line finish.  I really like how it turned out!  The panels are inexpensive and come in lots of great sizes!
